What Is Plavina?

An Indigenous Grape Variety of the Šibenik Region

Plavina is one of the oldest and best-known indigenous red grape varieties of Dalmatia. It has been cultivated for centuries in the areas of Ravni Kotari, Bukovica and the Šibenik hinterland, where it has become an important part of the local winemaking tradition.

Although it has often been overshadowed by better-known Dalmatian varieties, in recent years Plavina has experienced a well-deserved revival and is attracting increasing attention from wine lovers.

Characteristics of the Variety

Plavina produces wines known for their distinctive fruitiness and elegance.

The most prominent aromas include:

  • sour cherries,
  • cherries
  • raspberries
  • forest berries
  • subtle spicy notes

The wines are medium-bodied, pleasantly fresh and have soft tannins, making them very approachable and enjoyable for everyday drinking.

A Grape Variety with Great Potential

For many years, Plavina was often used as a blending variety. Today, more and more winemakers are producing varietal Plavina wines, demonstrating its full potential.

With careful work in the vineyard and cellar, it is possible to produce wines that retain their distinctive fruitiness while gaining additional depth and complexity.

Ideal for Gastronomy

Plavina pairs exceptionally well with:

  • pasta,
  • pizza,
  • grilled dishes,
  • lighter meat dishes,
  • Dalmatian specialties.

Thanks to its elegance, it is often the choice of those looking for a red wine that is neither too heavy nor too powerful.
